Inside the 'freeway loop', Kansas City's nucleus is easily explored on foot, with most major attractions just a short distance apart, while the greater downtown area is spread across a much more expansive region.
Visitors without their own transport have the option of utilizing Kansas City's various modes of public travel and transportation, including Metro buses, taxis and the Kansas City Trolley, while Amtrak train travel, Greyhound bus travel and selected flights provide links to destinations across the country.
Kansas City International Airport (KCI) / Arriving by Air
Lying roughly 18 miles / 29 km from the heart of the city, Kansas City International Airport serves flights to and from a comprehensive range of national and international destinations. Transport into downtown Kansas City is provided by taxi travel, limousines and the less expensive KCI shuttle bus, KCI Roadrunner Express, Tiger Air Express and Metro bus travel services. Car Rental
With most of the city's highlights concentrated in downtown Kansas City, there is not much need for a car, while in the metropolitan area itself the city provides an efficient public transport system serving the inner city region. However, Kansas City's outlying areas are home to a veritable treasure chest of attractions, ranging from historical highlights to superb scenery and wildlife havens, which are best explored by hire car. These are available from vehicle rental companies located in the airport and scattered throughout the urban center, while major highways are plentiful in and around the Kansas City area, offering convenient access. US Route 71, US Route 169, and US Route 40 travel to and from the city, as do several Interstates including I-70, I-635 and I-29.
Buses and Coaches
Efficiently organized and reasonably priced Metro buses provide transportation to destinations across the city and nearby locations. Greyhound buses in Kansas City travel to towns and cities farther afield, with daily buses offering inexpensive travel to and from Omaha (a 4-hour journey), St. Louis (a 5-hour journey) and
Chicago (a 13-hour journey).
Trains
The Amtrak train station is situated just behind Union Station, with two services traveling regularly to Kansas City, one running via Chicago and the other stopping at
Illinois,
Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and
California en route to Kansas City.
Trams
The Kansas City Trolley provides regular travel every half hour, stopping at various destinations between the River Market, north of downtown and The Plaza on the southern perimeters of the city.
Taxis
Taxis are easily available in Kansas City, with taxi stands outside KCI Airport and the city's significant hotels, shopping and entertainment areas.
